Racing for RACYC members is co-ordinated by the Yacht Manager.

Racing Crews Wanted!

If you are a seasoned racer or just have an interest the Yacht Manager would like to hear from you. He is putting together crews for those races that White Knight V will be entered for this year. You should have some sailing experience and ideally be qualified as a Competent Crew or above. Don't miss this opportunity if you want to race and experience the excitement that racing provides.

The Army's New Yacht - Crews Wanted!

Please find attached the offshore racing programme for the Army’s new yacht, British Soldier.  She is an Archambault 40, a 39’ bowsprit-and-masthead asymmetric flyer.  She will be the 2nd yacht out of the mould for delivery in March.

Others will be co-ordinating the inshore races; my interest is to race offshore with a programme that leads up to the proper blue-water races in August to and from Madeira.  If you want to do either of these you will certainly have to show willing earlier in the season!

So what crew are we looking for?  Well this won’t be a boat for the complete novice.  But it is there for the enthusiast who has raced before, understands a bit about sailing and wants to do more.  If you tell me you’re an aspiring bow-man who loves nothing more than changing headsails at night in a gale, then (a) you’re probably nuts and (b) you’re on!  If you want to trim the kite for hours at a time whilst surfing down the Channel at 18-20 knots, you’re on.  If you want to steer the boat downwind at night with a large breaking and following sea, you’re also on.  If you don’t mind being pulled out of your pit 10 minutes after getting into it because more hands are needed on deck, then also come along.  And if you can keep the rest of the crew amused whilst sitting on the rail on Day 5, go to the front of the queue!  Just fill-in the attached form and return it to me, so that I can begin to square-away a crew for the season.  And if you know anyone that you think should be included, please make sure they get a copy of this.

Racing aboard British Soldier is an Army-representative sport; it is regardless of rank and you should be accorded the appropriate time, resources and allowances to take part, operations notwithstanding.  If you think you should be racing but may have difficulty ‘getting away’, send me an e-mail, my link is on the "Contact" page.

Regards

Nick Bate
