Regattas & Yacht Meets
The RACYC holds one regatta a year - at Seaview, Isle of Wight. This year the regatta will be held over the period 21 - 23 May 12 and, as per last year, will be held as part of the Combat Arms Regatta together with the Infantry. The club used to run a regatta at Kiel in Germany but this has been suspended in the light of reduced RAC numbers in Germany. Seaview is open to crews from RAC regiments (Regular and Yeomanry), RAC training and support units and ad hoc organisations with an RAC pedigree. Details of yacht meets will be posted on the website.
Information about the Cups & Trophies can be found in the History section.
Seaview 2011 Regatta - Report and Results: The inaugural Combat Arms Regatta (CAR) was held in late May at the Seaview Yacht Club, Isle of Wight. This exciting new venture combined the respective core regattas of the Royal Armoured Corps Yacht Club and the Infantry Sailing Association. Some 21 teams turned out in total, representing a significant increase on the individual clubs’ numbers in recent years.
This really was a vintage Regatta. The conditions were just about perfect, with a steady breeze of 11-17 knots and bright sunshine throughout. The Commodore (Col Ogden) and Chief Race Officer (Major (Retd) Peter Schofield) set a full series of testing courses that enabled all crews, from novices to veterans, to get the most out of the boats and the conditions.
Much enjoyment was also had off the water, with a cocktail party on the first night, attended by all crews, DRAC and DInf, plus several local dignitaries. The Team Army sponsors for this event were Q-Optik, who we hope may return next year. The Tuesday night started with the traditional RACYC Seaview dinner and the ISA supper in The Fort, followed by suitable combined bantering and spinning of yarns in the pub. All crews were suitably refreshed and relaxed for the rigours of racing the following morning, in particular The Queen’s Royal Lancers subalterns.
The racing was close fought throughout, with 9 races sailed. In this inaugural year, an Infantry team won the Regatta overall, with the 2 Royal Welsh Agamemnon team beating DRAC B by the narrowest of margins (they tied on points, but the Royal Welsh had the lower discard). These two teams stood out, but the pack was not far behind. Within the RAC, DRAC B were the best team overall but 1 RTR won the inter-regimental event.
All competitors agreed it had been a fantastic event. It was great to see the camaraderie and friendly banter evident in the relationship between DRAC and DInf as they are shortly to merge into the Combat Directorate. The outgoing Director Infantry summed it up at prizegiving, noting the Regatta had been a resounding success, and urging all to book early for next year; CAR 12 will be held 21-23 May 2012. Despite the ongoing pressures of campaign FORM, Regiments are strongly urged to consider sending a team to this excellent event. Don’t miss out!

Kiel 2010 Regatta and Sail Training Week Regrettably the RAC Regatta Kiel was cancelled in 2010 as there were insufficient entries. The RACYC does not expect to run any further regattas at Kiel.
